Avidya is incorrect comprehension related to false perception or misapprehension. It is the result of accumulated unconscious actions which lead to a mind dependent on habits.
Avidya is also the root cause of the following obstacles that prevent us from recognizing things as they really are:
Asmita or ahamkara: the sense of I, the ego, which leads to confused values.
Raga: excessive attachment related to the memory of pleasure.
Dvesa: refusal to accept, unreasonable dislike related to the fear of suffering.
Abhinivesa: fear, insecurity, attachment to life.
We have two levels of perception: one deep within, which is free of avidya, and the other more superficial which is obscured by avidya.
The goal of yoga is to reduce avidya in order to truly understand ourselves and the world, act correctly and find peace and contentment.
